Brass-Banded Megillah Cases

Reclaimed Wenge, Redwood, Southern Yellow Pine, Brass.
Crafting Legacy: The Three Megillah Boxes
This project involved creating three bespoke Megillah boxes, each designed to protect and elevate the significance of the sacred scroll within. The work combined careful craftsmanship with thoughtful material selection, blending tradition with modern execution.
Each box was crafted from a distinct wood: one from wenge, known for its deep color and strength, and two from reclaimed softwoods — Southern yellow pine (also known as heart pine) and redwood. The use of reclaimed wood added character and history to the pieces, with the grain and imperfections telling a story of their own.
A defining feature of these boxes is the custom brass bands, sourced from a specialty company that resurrects antique and legacy metal patterns. These bands are more than decorative; they add structural integrity while honoring historic design motifs. Their warm patina and intricate detailing complement the natural tones of the wood, reinforcing the Art Deco-inspired aesthetic that guided the overall form.
The lids, mounted on custom hinges, pivoted smoothly upward and backward, ensuring secure closure while allowing easy access to the scroll. Clean joinery and a hand-rubbed finish highlighted the natural beauty of the wood, while subtle variations in grain and tone made each box unique.
This project reflects my commitment to creating one-of-a-kind pieces that honor both the materials and the tradition they serve. If you're seeking a custom piece that blends artistry with meaning, I invite you to reach out and discuss your vision.
