Memorial Candle (Yahrzeit) נר זכרון

Figured walnut, Brass.  Height 2-1/2 x Width 1-1/4 x Long 9-1/2 inches,

This Yahrzeit piece is crafted in honor of the day of remembrance dedicated to our departed loved ones. Comprising two flexible steel legs bridged by an ash wood beam secured with wedges, the structure provides a poignant foundation. Once assembled, a metal crucible, encompassing an oil reservoir and wick, is delicately placed, ready to illuminate the flame of remembrance.
At the end of the day of reflection, this piece can be somberly disassembled, patiently waiting until the next occasion.
Inspiration for this creation arose from disappointment with the poorly made and uninspiring glass (or tin) Yahrzeit candles prevalent in the market. These commonplace options seemed inadequate for commemorating the memory of our loved ones, often appearing shoddy and lacking in reverence. Perhaps due to their morbid association or because they occupy an obscure niche in the Judaica world, only a handful of designers are willing to reimagine a Yahrzeit candle.
Undoubtedly, the life of someone who has passed away deserves a more dignified remembrance. This belief led me to make the Yahrzeit candle the focal point of the artist retreat—an endeavor driven by a motivation to rethink its aesthetics. My design aims to uplift and infuse this object of solemn expression with the reflective meaning it truly deserves.
Much like many of my projects, this Yahrzeit candle is designed to be easily assembled and disassembled, offering both reverence and practicality. Join me in commemorating the lives of our loved ones with a piece that transcends the ordinary, inviting reflection and remembrance in a more meaningful way.
